Description

Burao is the second largest city in Somaliland and the capital of the Togdheer region. Burao is also an important commercial centre and hosts the largest livestock market in the region.

Burao is a pleasant city with good selection of hotels and other amenities. For many travellers it might be worth visiting simply because it is the furthest you can travel east before starting your 4 x 4 trip to further afield Erigavo and Dallo Forest.

Burao lies 260 km from Hargeisa along the surfaced road that runs via Berbera and Sheikh, respectively 120 km and 60 km away depending on roadblocks, expect the drive from Hargeisa to take around four hours in a private vehicle. Taxis for Burao leave Hargeisa from the station on the east side of the town centre, close to the police station.
